Education is the key to breaking out of the cycle of poverty in this region plagued by illiteracy. College scholarships are offered to worthy graduating seniors outstanding for their witness to the faith. The “Youth Missionaries” (“Jóvenes Misioneros”) commute to university in San Juan and in their free time give back to the parish by serving as leaders of youth ministry and other ministries in the parish. The cost to sponsor one of these students is $150 US per month.
In 2004 the Mission established a parish school (pre-K through 8th grade). Today 250 students are receiving an education far superior to the education offered in the public school system and pay just $3/month (real cost is $30/month). The school has a newly built library and will soon have a computer lab with 25 computers (all thanks to generous donors).
