Spiritual Needs

Though Christianity arrived to this island 500 years ago, the work of evangelization is required anew for every generation. Dominican culture boasts many rich Catholic traditions and a profound devotion to Mary under the title of “Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia” (“Our Lady of High Grace”). Devotion to Saint Francis of Assisi is particularly strong in the Bánica Mission.

The sacramental ministry of priests from the Diocese of Arlington along with the many lay missionaries (both American and Dominican) continues to fortify and strengthen the faith of these simple people who live off the land and mean it when they say, “Si Dios quiere…” (“If God wills it…”)
